Hirosaki Park

Hirosaki Park is one of Japan’s most famous cherry blossom viewing sites and its generous grounds house over 2,600 trees. The park also encompasses Hirosaki Castle, considered one of the most beautiful in Japan and the sole surviving structure of its kind in Tohoku dating back to the Edo Period (1603–1868). During the annual cherry blossom festival, visitors flock to enjoy magnificent spring views against this historical backdrop—as the petals frame the castle’s moats, gates, and turrets in shades of pink.

The original five-story castle was built in 1611 by Nobuhira Tsugaru, the feudal lord of the local Hirosaki clan, but disaster struck in 1927, when it burnt down after being struck by lightning, whereupon the current structure was rebuilt in 1810 as a three-story tower. The castle features turrets and gates designated as Important Cultural Properties, while the rest of its grounds are a listed National Heritage Site.

Alongside the cherry blossom festival, seasonal highlights include a range of other important cultural events. During the Snow Lantern Festival, for example, in February, the twinkling candlelight of hundreds of lanterns gently illuminates the park. In summer, giant fan-shaped floats parade through the castle district as part of the Hirosaki Neputa Festival; while the fall foliage festival sees its moats lined with water lilies and encircled by flaming red maples and golden gingko trees.

Make the most of your visit to Hirosaki Park with a combination ticket which allows access to the castle, Botanical Garden, and Fujita Memorial Garden. The latter is a Japanese landscape garden featuring a central pond, waterfall, a traditional Japanese house, and a tea house. Strolling around this tranquil enclave and the wider grounds, you can enjoy enveloping yourself in serenity and gain a deeper appreciation for the traditional Japanese aesthetic in the process.
